good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave -- i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. breaking news. a stunning decision involving the leader of the roman catholic church. the pope is stepping down. ktvu's tara moriarty joins you live from san francisco with more. >> reporter: some parishioners are wondering why the pope just didn't stay in office until he died. we're here at st. mary's cathedral. it's across the street from the san francisco archdiocese where mass began about 15 minutes ago. for years there have been reports of the pope's ailing health. but one of the biggest clues may have come prior to his election in 2005. pope benedict xvi hoped to retire and write books. he's he's a highly regarded scholar in theology.

he submitted his resignation three times. despite statements that he didn't have the mental and physical strength to go on, one parishioner said it was bad timing. >> i would have resigned after -- let's say after easter. this is the most highly, highly -- holy, holiday of the catholic church. >> reporter: the 85-year-old's last day of pope will be february 28th the last time a pope resigned was nearly 600 years ago, in 1415, when pope gregory stepped down in order to an end a civil war within the church. pope benedict xvi was born in 1927 as joseph ratzinger in germany he was forced into hitler's youth at age 14. he served in the army but

deserted and was captured by the americans. we are hoping to speak from officials from the archdiocese this morning. we'll let you know what they have to say. live from san francisco, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. in overnight news, a crash in concord leaves one man with life-threatening injuries. police say he was walking across clayton road near bay lie road around 6:15 last night when a car hit him. investigators say the 52-year- old man was not in a crosswalk. he was rushed to john muir medical center. police know who hit him. an investigation is still underway. copper thieves are causing big problems for bay area drivers. alex savidge has a look at -- a look at this problem. >> reporter: copper thieves could be partly to blame for

that lengthy commute. they targeted metering lights here at the isabel avenue entrance to 580 here. i will show you what they did. they broke into this electrical box here and they ripped off the valuable copper wire inside and hence the metering lights at this exit/entrance have been out for the couple of weeks. caltrans says a total of 599 lights have been vandalled -- 59 lights have been vandalized. the cost, $35,000 just to repair one of those lights. it takes several months to do the replacement work. thieves are ripping out copper wire from stoplights and freeway signs and that's contributing to traffic issues around the bay area. the incentive for thieves, the price of copper has tripled in the past four years. in the meantime, caltrans and many agencies are fighting

book. they are switching to aluminum fire. now, coming up this morning at 8:00, we'll tell you about the new california law that aims to deter copper theft. live in livermore, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. today, mississippi's governor will be out seeing the tornado damage that injured more than a dozen people. homes and businesses were damaged in hattiesburg yesterday. a state of emergency was declared on the university of southern mississippi. that's where the tornado damaged several buildings, the haititysburg -- the hattiesburg school district canceled the schools because of the damage. a lot of people are saying this is the damage that reminds them of hurricane katrina. new england is still recovering from a powerful weekend snowstorm. many highways were cleared. so most people could return to work this morning and power is

being restored. warmer temperatures could bring rain instead of snow. but there's still concern that roofs may collapse under the added weight. the storm is blamed for at least 15 deaths in the northeast and canada. things are getting back to normal at san francisco international airport this morning after a weekend of cancellations from this nor'easter. dozens of flights were canceled on friday and saturday as airports on the east coast closed due to the blizzard conditions. that left passengers stranded at airports across the country including sfo. but all major airports have reopened following the storm. 7:06. let's go to sal. sal, we see the snow problem on the east coast. our problems in the commute could be worse. >> they could be, yeah. i'm gonna show you beautiful san francisco where there's no snow, not even rain. it's looking good, northbound 101 approaching the 80 split as you drive through. no major problems as you drive

on 280 to downtown. now, driving into san francisco may be a different story. the bay bridge, it's pretty jam packed. i'm saying this commute is gonna take you a while. the last time we saw it this slow, it's been a little while since it was slow -- since it was slow. let's talk about the nim its freeway. -- nimitz freeway, that traffic is still better than it usually is. oakland 580 and 880 still looking good. you might want to take advantage of that. let's go to steve. very good morning. clear skies. temperatures on the coast for some. inland, cold. anywhere from upper 20s, 30s to low 50s all because of a northeast breeze. that's really helping the jet stream stays north and then dives into the middle of of the country. our low is right in the four corners. it looks like an active week for everyone except us. in fact, temperatures -- we might see some low 70s by wednesday if not thursday. no rain this week. 7 and 10-day outlook do not

people. hal eisner joins us with more. good morning, hal. >> reporter: hi, tori. there's never been a reward like this. it's the largest local reward here in southern california. but there's never been a case like this, involving somebody targeting police. that somebody being an ex- police officer. so this reward, a million dollars, is out there for anybody who can provide information that leads to the arrest and the conviction of christopher christopher -- christopher dorner. >> my office is posting a reward of $1 million for information that will lead to mr. dorner's capture. >> reporter: you know, it was just a week ago last night that monica quan and keith lawrence were shot to death in irvine. and that started this ball rolling. dorner is 33 years old. he's an ex-navy intelligence guy and a former l.a. police officer who has vowed to

take down l.a. police officers in his manifesto. it was a whole week last week those two deaths and then shootings of three other officers, one dying in riverside. authorities are dealing with a very challenging situation. first of all, false calls. one at lowe's hardware in the san fernando valley yesterday locked in a hundred people in that store as a result of police getting a tip he was inside. he was not in there. the other thing is, that there are about 15 people in this man fess co that dorner put out that are l.a.p.d. members, families, that are known targets to the police department. so they have security details and surveillance details out in 50 neighborhoods in the city of los angeles. tori, there has never been a case like this in southern california. and there has never been a reward like this because of that, a million dollars for

information leading to the arrest and conviction of christopher dorner. tori? >> all right. thank you, hal. the government will investigate the fatal crash of a movie production helicopter in los angeles county. three people died when the shopper went down at the ranch south of palmdale early yesterday morning. they were filming a new reality show for the discovery channel. discovery called the crash a tragic accident and said it was cooperating fully with authorities. the faa says the cause of the crash is still not known. 7:15. five people have been killed in a cruise ship accident on the canary islandses. a lifeboat from a thompson cruiser ship fell into the ocean during a safety drill. five crew members were killed and three others were hurt. 1400 passengers were on board at the time, no passengers were hurt. meantime, more than 4,000 people are stranded on a cruise ship in the gulf of mexico. the coast guard has been in

contact with the crew of the carnival triumph. it's about 500 miles from galveston, texas. they don't have enough power to get the ship to port. carnival says the ship will be towed to mexico and then travel arrangements will be made for those passengers. just 45 minutes from now, vice president joe biden will sit down with lawmakers and police in philadelphia to find ways to curb gun violence. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, the white house faces fierce opposition on one of its proposals. kyla? >> reporter: president obama wants to put an expired assault weapons ban back in place. but the nra and gun owners say no way, they support enforcing laws that are already in place and new efforts to keep the mentally ill from getting guns. vice president joe biden is meeting with lawmakers and police with the philadelphia -- from the philadelphia area next

hour. the white house is trying to rally police report for new gun laws. proposals include bans. >> i think there's gonna be a lot of hearings but probably more in the mental health area, potentially in some of the background check area but anything that hints towards some sort of national registry won't make it. >> how this gun control debate is expected to play a role in tomorrow night's state of the union address when i see you next. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:17. video game violence is becoming a double-edged sword for marin county where game production pulls in big money. marin is home to several gaming companies and studios. the county open hopes the industry -- hopes the industry

will stir growth. at the same time, individuals are being urged to turn those in for money. 7:18. two state lawmakers think members of the legislature should have enough time to read the bills they are actually voting on. an april semablywoman from modesto and a state senator from davis, they want to change the california constitution. theyant all proposed laws to be available online sand in printed form for at least 72 hours before any vote could be taken. that would mean the legislature couldn't just jam through bills at the end of a session. that proposal would require voter approval. california could face a doctor shortage while trying to meet the demands of the federal affordable care act. the "l.a. times" reports 16 of california's 58 counties have the recommended number of primary care doctors. in addition 30% of california's doctors are near retirement age. now, to try to deal with the

problem, lawmakers are proposing giving more authority to physician assistants, nurse practitioners and even pharmacists, some doctors worry that could put patients at risk. 7:19. later this afternoon, the sonoma county woman accused killing her mother will face a judge for the first time. deputies say 24-year-old julia franzen is accused of stabbing her 54-year-old mother nancy last week in their sebastopol home. deputies think the two may have gotten into an argument. neighbors say julia franzen has mental health problems. her mother was trying to get her help. this week, officials will hear barry bonds' appeal on obstruction of justice charges. bonds needs at least two of the three judges to overturn his conviction. he was convicted in 2011 of misleading a federal grand jury

investigating the balco steroid scandal. there's a new king of pebble beach. brandt snetikar. he broke through for his first victory of 2013 after finishing second to tiger woods and phil mickelson. 7:20. gas prices keep going up which means you have less money to spend on other things. the national average for a gallon of regular is now $3.59. that's up 25 cents in the last two weeks. they've gone up a little bit more than a dime here in california but our prices are still higher than the national average. the highest bay area average is san francisco, $4.02. it's still a few bennies less than 4 bucks around the rest of the bay area. analysts say prices could still inch up before the end of the

concord police are looking

for individuals who are slashing tires. brian flores is live with more. >> reporter: we're live on bel air drive at this apartment complex or condo complex, i should say. a lot of the residents say they like living here but the problem, this is probably the second time that tires have been slashed. this car having to deal with one, two, even four tires slashed. police are left wondering who is responsible for this. according to concord police, tire slashings happen sometime before 7:00 a.m. on sunday morning. that's when the first reports came in. they are targeting on glacier drive, bel air drive and it wasn't just one tire. it was four tires on most cases. one resident says not only is this a huge inconvenience, but costly. >> the tires have to be

replaced. we're looking at about $800 for the cost. >> reporter: wow. >> replacing all of the four tires. it's all of the four tires that were damaged. >> reporter: and tow trucks are continuing to come here at least in this complex this morning to tow the cars to tire shops. last april 37 tires had tires slashed. and christmas eve, tires were slashed in concord. we take it out here live, we saw at least seven, ten cars affected. some residents say the cars parked inside this gated area. mostly the cars outside of here were mostly affected. we'll talk to concord police and see what's the latest on the investigation. back to you. >> thank you. unanswered questions this morning about a deadly shooting in unincorn rated san jose. sheriff deputies say they found

the body of a man shot outside of a home on rhonda drive creed afternoon around 4:00. at -- yesterday afternoon at around 4:00. at the same time, another man showed up with a gunshot wound. investigators say he was at -- at that same home. >> we're just concerned if this is a homicide, suicide, or any other crimes may be involved. >> the injured man is expected to survive. deputies say the shooting appears to be an isolated case and the community is not in danger. >> your time is now 7:32. police in palo alto searching for the gunman who robbed a man in a carport. the gunman is described as being in his late 20s or early 30s. take a look. if you have any information, call palo alto police.

in los gatos, debate over restricting gun sales expected to get so hot some people want the town council meeting tonight to be postponed. ktvu's janine de la vega, live in los gatos, where one gun storeowner says he's even getting death threats. >> reporter: dave, that's right. the attorney for the gun store from templar sport issued this letter asking the council to postpone the meeting tonight because the owner of the gun store got death threats after last week's meeting. i checked on the website for the town of los gatos and the meeting will go on tonight. let's go to video from last week's town council meeting which was packed who were divide the. people were voicing their -- who were divided people were voicing their concern. others are support, the gun store. that meeting ran until

midnight. it's supposed to continue tonight. the council wants to explore whether to make policies on where the gun stores are made and to require i.d. checks. after last week's meeting, robert chang, one of the three owners of the templar sports, received a death threat. residents we spoke to were appalled to hear this. >> it's sad there is a death threat against him owning a store that sells gun. >> reporter: do you think it's gotten out of hand? >> yes. >> reporter: do you think that los gatos should be exploring any kind of a policy on tightening gun control? >> yes. i don't think we should sell attack weapons. as a business owner, if he's following the law, he should be able to have his own business. >> reporter: the police department is investigating and the owner's attorney did -- did not want to elaborate on the

death threat. but he's concerned about the safety of the other two owners. one is a los gatos police officer, the other is a los gatos businessman. that meeting happens at 7:00. again, hundreds were in attendance last week. it's still expected to be packed tonight. i've already reached out to the attorney for the templar sports to get reaction to the meeting. in the next a hour, the store is expected to open up. we hope to have more next hour. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. 7:35. today will be getting a look at the $1.3 billion highway 4 project that include extending b.a.r.t. defense to antioch. they are looking service to

antioch -- they are looking at -- b.a.r.t. to antioch. the meeting is scheduled to he begin at 10:00 a.m. on lone tree way. the chronicle is reporting that b.a.r.t. is considering to upgrade the embarcadero and montgomery stations in san francisco. the $900 million expansion calls for allowing riders to board and exit on both sides of the train. b.a.r.t. would add staircases and elevators. construction could take five years. stations would remain open during the renovation. tonight, b.a.r.t. is holding a first of series of communeny meetings about a new law that would allow lied riders to be babbed for up to a year. riders to deface property must be cited at least three times in the 90-day period before they are banned. riders who are violent can be banned after one incident. the law is scheduled to go into

46 minutes from grantline to 680. and if you are driving on highway 4 in antioch. the slow traffic in antioch but it gets better in pittsburg and bay point. now it's 7:38. let's go to steve. sunrise over the big city. it's clear skies. cold for some, lows anywhere from 30s to near 50. a very quiet dry weekend. in fact, sunny and warmer. in fact, most of the seven, ten- day outlooks promising for main. february will probably follow a similar pattern in january. sunny and warm. a dry forecast even warmer weather. it looks like some 70s popping up until we hit january. one dry month is okay. now rainfall is going under 100%. san jose is there. santa rosa holding onto 100%. they will probably go to 91 and 98. if not today, tomorrow.

connecticut, new hampshire, boston. a storm that slammed the region. there is a lot of snow to clean up. at least nine people were killed after a record number of snow. tori dunham is in boston to explain why people may be facing a huge challenge. tori? >> reporter: all right. so people here in boston and massachusetts in some of the nearby states are trying to dig out from all of the snow. it's especially bad where cars are completely covered in snow. on top of all of that, there's rhine falling. digging out -- rain falling. digging out. rescuing cars stranded on highways. from pennsylvania to maine, the blizzard that hit friday is still wreaking havoc. connecticut saw some of the highest snow totals. people look out their windows and see 40 inches of snow. they realize this is not a snowstorm. this is a disaster.

this is an emergency. this is dangerous. >> reporter: whether they are trying to figure out a parking spot or farm animals, this is a workout. >> there's no reason to get around unless you have a snowplow. so i figured i would put in a few hours. >> reporter: with snowbanks running higher than 3 feet, people are running out of places to put this all. >> it's frustrated to find nooks and crannies to stick the snow in. >> reporter: while many are getting back to work, it's another snow day for kids in boston where crews are still trying to clear the streets. a lot of the side streets, still need to be plowed. with a mix of rain and snow in the forecast, already heavy snow could get heavier and more dangerous. particularly on roofs and on the roads. once that gets wet and once it freezes. that's the equivalent of a jersey barrier. people need to slow down. some have had enough of this

being worth than the u.s. dollar. 7:45. well, an investigation by san francisco city attorneys into how some city employees used city computers should wrap up soon. the p.u.c. is working with the district attorney to investigate that several work employees used the computers to download pornography and gamble online. the inappropriate use of looking at explicitly sexual materials and gambling online can lead to employees being fired. the america's cup race could cost taxpayers millions of dollars. pam cook is in the studio right now. what's the reason for the big deal. >> there are a few reasons. $20billion. that amount is what could fall on san francisco to pay. now, with less than three months to go, the money raised to host the world-class event

and orange county. he's due to meet with executives on high tech financial insurance and movie industries. he wants them to relocate their firms to texas. last week in a radio ad governor perry said texas offers a friendlier business environment than california. 7:48. tomorrow night, president obama will deliver his first state of the union address of his second term. jamie dupree joins us via skype. what are you hearing about the focus of the president's state of the union address? >> reporter: the basic line out of officials from the white house the last couple of days has been that the president will focus on economic issues, job and the economy, still at the top of the list. but, of course, i would think, tori, that he will talk about a number of very detailed items like the ideas of gun and gun violence in the wake of the

newtown, connecticut shootings, immigration reform issues and the budget cuts coming up on march -- march 1,the focus -- the -- march 1st. the focus the white house is saying the argument will be on economic issues. we'll see what happens tomorrow night. >> do you expect he will set a more conciliatory tone with republicans or will he still have that aggression tone at the inauguration address? >> reporter: we've seen some reports of it -- it will be more aggressive. i guess there's two ways to look at it. right now, the republicans are basically saying we don't want to do x, y, and z, when it comes to the budget items and the reform and the issues on gun and gun control. so you could look at it two ways. the president probably has to sort of tread a fine line in a tense, tori, while urging action in the congress. he doesn't want to come april cross so negatively that it hurts overall -- across so negativity that it hurts

overall. we'll see what sort of mix of ingredients they come up with tomorrow night. but judging, i have to say, tori, from the number of people, including in, who will be bringing a guess, to the state of the union address victims of relatives of people who have observed gun violence, it looks like democrats will be on the move on that issue and i would assume others as well. >> even just today we had the shooting at courthouse in delaware that -- where a man is accused of shooting his wife. so it's still gun control issues, still very much in the forefront. >> reporter: i expect the president to talk about that. in his inaugural address, he made a passing revs to gun violence. didn't really talk about it. one would think with the hearing tomorrow on the issue, that democrats will be fully ready to bring that up and i would fully expect the president to do the same tomorrow night. >> all right.

ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live from san francisco with more whoop was behind this morning a historic announcement. tara? >> reporter: well, some say it's bad timing with easter coming up so close. this is really the spiritual time for catholics, a very busy time of the year. so a lot of people say that he should have waited. others here at st. mary's cathedral here near the archdiocese headquarters say that, you know, they feel bad for him. if he needed to step, he needed to. there are been reports of his ailing health and right around the time of his election in 2005, pope benedict hoped to retire and spend more time writing books. he's a highly regarded scholar in theology. that was shot down basically by pope john paul ii. now, pope benedict told vatican cardinals that he didn't have the strength to go on. people we spoke to this morning said all of the other popes except one have died in office.

why couldn't he? but others were sympathetic. >> i was listening to the catholic radio station and they were saying he wanted to resign even before. right now, he feels this is it. so god bless him. >> reporter: the 85-year-old ally last day of pope will be february 28th. the last time the pope resigned was nearly 600 years ago, when pope gregory xii stepped down in an effort to end the civil war within the church. pope benedict xvi was born in 1927 as joseph ratzinger. he served in the army but deserted and was eventually captured by americans and then released. his decision sets the stage for a new pope to be elected before the end of march. the san francisco archdiocese just opened about a minute ago. we are hoping to speak to someone from there and get

reaction on this event. >> all right. tara, you can get more information about the surprise resignation announcement about the pope by going to ktvu.com. click on the pope resigns tab. 8:01. police in san mateo, warning residents about an increase in residential burglaries. the police say several burglaries have been reported in the fiesta gardens and shoreview neighborhoods of san mateo in recent weeks. most of them have been happening during the daytime when people are at work. the thieves usually 0 knock on the -- knock on the door first to find out if anyone is home. police are telling residents lock all of your windows and the doors. a crash in concord left one man with life-threatening injuries. police say he was walking across clayton road near bailey road about 6:15 last night when a car hit him. investigators say the 52-year- old man was not in the crosswalk at the time. he was rushed to john muir medical center. police say they know who hit him and the investigation

continues this morning. it is 8:01. a fatal shooting in san francisco's western edition has people searching for suspects. investigators say a man was shot in the chest at webster and hay streets after 2:00 a.m. the 21-year-old was later pronounced dead at the hospital. police don't have anyone in custody. they are still trying to figure out what led up to the shooting. it is a growing problem on bay area roads and freeway ramps. copper thieves have been targeting traffic and metering lights. alex savidge is in livermore with what's driving this trend. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning. the price of copper has tripled. thieves broke into this electrical box not long ago and stole a valuable copper wire inside. this box power, the freeway metering lights. we'll show you here to 580, the lights have been out now for the past couple of weeks. some believe this kind of

vandalism is leading to more traffic tieups around the bay area. caltrans says a total of 59 lights have been vandalized in the bay area over just the past here and crews have only been able to fix 18 of them so far. the cost is about $35,000 to repair one of the meters. it takes several months to do all of that replacement work. thieves are ripping out copper wire from stop signs and freeway signs and that's contributing to traffic delays. in the meantime, caltrans and other agencies, they are trying to fight back and switching over to aluminum fire. there's also a new state law here in california that takes effect this year that will increase the penalties for copper thieves and for those metal recyclers. in many cases, they could face three years behind bars. again, this is a -- a trend that's developing. one that drivers out there don't want to hear about if it's gonna lead to longer commutes.

the commute time is already bad enough as it is around the bay area. with that being said, we'll send it over to sal castanedo with a look at how the drive is this morning. hi, sal. >> reporter: good morning, alex. it's slow. the traffic is moving along slowly at the been toll plaza. in the last few minutes we've seen some improvement. we haven't had any accidents. traffic is still backed up for about a 25-minute delay getting into -- before you make it on the bridge. looking at the 880 commute, it's filled in quite a bit. this is 880 northbound near the coliseum. that begins to slow down up to oakland. there's a vehicle fire on the altamont pass. that commute has been almost an hour from grantline road to 680. that's terrible an hour to -- when it's not moving slowly, this same commute could take 15 minutes. now it's taking four times as much. ouch. it's terrible. let's go to steve.

people can surrender with no questions asked and get up to $300. cash will be limited. happening right now, vice president is in philadelphia discussing ring gun violence with police and law enforcement officials at a round table meeting. as kyle campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, the gun control debate heats up this week. >> reporter: the biggest is here in washington. the president's state of the union address is tomorrow night. president obama is expected to tell his opponents on his issue that something has to be done while telling gun control supporters there are limits to what they can do. we just learned a man whose wife was killed in the newtown shooting in december decomplained an invitation to the state of the union address. the white house pitched several plans since then, including universal background checks, a gun on -- ban on magazines carrying more than ten bullets and a man on assault weapons.

vice president joe biden and president obama are crisscrossing the country to rally support from police and lawmakers at the state and city levels. biden is meeting with pennsylvania lawmakers right now. we'll hear more later today. the president plans to go to chicago on friday. his hometown is seeing gun rounds skyrocketing. robert gates says he supports using aerial drones to target suspected terrorists. >> you can far more easily limit collateral damage with a drone than you can with a bo, even a precision-guided munition of an airplane. >> the u.s. military's use of drones has been controversial, especially in afghanistan where civilian casualties from drone attacks have really angered the

afghan government. back here, law enforcement agencies are still considering using domestic drones. this is a hot issue sparking a lot of controversy. coming up at 8:23, we'll take a look at what we found out in a ktvu special report and why unmanned aircraft may already be flying in your neighborhood. time is now 8:16. the manhunt goes on for christopher dorner. a $1 million reward was announced by city leaders for information leading to the capture of christopher dorner. our reporter is joining us live from los angeles with details. william? >> reporter: well, dave, having declared war on l.a.p.d. last week, the department responded last weekend in kind, lanabling dorner a -- lashling dorner a -- labeling dorner a terrorist. we have some new to show you.

it shows dorner as a cadet as a police candidate in 2005. the city is upping the ante with money opening the $1 million will help lead to leads that will lead to his arrest. they are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars a day as it is trying to protect some 50 l.a.p.d. officers and their families that dorner has targeted for murder. >> collectively, this group led by my office is posting a reward of $1 million for information that will lead to mr. dorner's capture. >> reporter: now, for the search in the san bernardino mountains, that's been scaled back to about 30 officers who announced this morning going to the upper regions of the san bernardino mountains seeing if he might be there. the police have formed a federal task force there to coordinate their coverage and screen their calls.

a deadly stampede at a train station in india. the police are out there and they are also helping people who fell to the ground. more than 30 died. most were there attending a hindu festival. a stampede started after someone fell down from a platform bridge. others blame the police saying they had charged at the crowds. 8:24. in a ktvu special report, we took a look at the controversy surrounds domestic drones in our country. last thursday, seattle police abandoned the idea of using drones after public opposition. but on thursday, alameda county will consider drones for their sheriff department. some people are building drones in their homes for personal use. but that has many people concerned about their privacy. >> it's obviously an invasion of privacy and it should deal with the situation as it happens. >> i'm just trying to have fun. it's a lot of fun. >> the aclu is opposed to

welcome back. tires were slashed on dozens of cars in concord. ktvu's brian flores is in concord now to tell us the area those vandals targeted. >> reporter: hi, dave. those residents are automatic billion 1400. this is -- are out $1400, they say. this is the third or third time these tires have been slashed, at least in this area.

this american, residents are having to deal with this -- this morning, residenting are having to deal with, not one -- residents are having to deal with not one but four tires. they believe the slashings happened before 7:00 a.m. on sunday morning. police tell us at least 60 cars had tires slashed. concord police say the vandals targeted parked cars on glacier drive, bel air and mochado. most of the cars had four tires slashed. one resident that we spoke with who depends on her car to get her to the b.a.r.t. says she hopes the vandals are caught soon. >> it's a non-gated entry. i think that would help. or maybe some people patrolling. we don't know what the situation is gonna be. >> reporter: she says she's about $700 to $800 to replace all four tires on her car. this is the only time this has happened here in concord. last april, 37 cars had tires

slashed. on christmas eve, four cars had tires slashed at an apartment complex in concord. as we take it back out here live, as we drove in here again, seven to ten cars affected. residents we spoke to said the cars in the gated part of the complex were not affected. we talked to to talk to concord -- we tried to talk to concord police. no word on any suspects. back to you. >> thank you. a debate over gun sales ends with death threats. ktvu's janine de la vega is live with who received the threats. you got off the phone with the attorney for the gun store. >> reporter: yes, he's had many sleepless nights ever since he received a death threat. as a result, he was told by the police department that security would be stepped up for tonight's meeting. now, the attorney for templar

sports says his client, robert chang, seen here, received a death threat last week after the town council meeting. he would not elaborate on details but said san jose police are investigating. he's concerned about chang and the other two owners' safety and asked that tonight's town council meeting be postponed but i just went and spoke to somebody inside town hall and they confirmed that the meeting will be going on tonight to allow people to voice their tone on templar sports and the sale of firearms in los gatos. most of the people we spoke to were actually in support of the store. this is what one person had to say about the threat and the store. >> violence. it makes no sense. this is -- i think this speaks of the level of passion people have in this town for keeping it safe. people can always have the attitude, you know, not in my town, not in my town.

but it doesn't make sense in this town. >> reporter: the town is looking to see whether it needs to tighten policies on gun stores and require conditional use permits an i.d. checks on the sale of firearms and ammunition. it doesn't appear that any policy that los gatos may make will impact templar sports. it will only affect it if the store expands and with affect any gun store operator that would operate in los gatos. the store and all of the people are invited to come to the meeting tonight at 7:00 here at the town council in los gatos. reporting live in los gatos, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. 8:34. two women are in jail after being accused of robbing the old navy store in concord. it happened yesterday afternoon in the willow pass shopping center. police say a woman went in the store with her 4-year-old son and stole several items. when a prevention officer confronted her, she pulled out

a knife, the woman jumped into another woman's car and they drove off. they were both later taken into custody. oakland police are looking for a man believed to be recall a and dangerous. police say they were called to the scene of an assault with a deadly weapon at 8:00 near 32 2nd street and martin luther king way. officers were able to capture one man but the other took off running. police say the victim did not suffer life-threatening injuries. police in tracy want your help. they are trying to find the driver involved in a deadly hit- and-run crash. last wednesday a bicyclist was hit and dilled in the crash. police are searching for a dark- colored '90s sedan that has tinted windows. it has a loud exhaust and may have front-end damage. if you have any information, call tracy police. mt. hamilton road has reopened after two car crash

victims were rescued yesterday afternoon in a very difficult rescue. the car landed 150 feet down a ravine along highway 130. the driver was trapped for more than two hours. the crews out there used ropes and pulleys to get that person out. two victims were taken to trauma centers and they are expected to survive. two small earthquakes rattled the geysers area of sonoma county overnight. the first quake hit around 10:30 and meshed 2.8. the second hit 30 minutes later and measured 2.7. there are no reports of any damage. in sacramento today, state senators will see a presentation about an earthquake early-warning system for california. state senator alex padilla has introduced legislation calling for this system. the goal would be to provide up to 60 seconds advanced warning of an earthquake. experts say that would be enough time to allow people to take cover, exit a building,

stop a train or power down critical infrastructure. today, mississippi's doctor will see the tornado -- governor will see the tornado damage that injured more than a dozen people. homes and businesses were damaged in hattiesburg yesterday. a state of emergency was dae claired on the -- declared on the university of mississippi. classes were canceled today because of storm damage. many who live there say this reminds them of the damage caused when hurricane katrina hit their city back in 2005. the northeast still still shivering and feeling the effects of that deadly snowstorm back there. most highways have reopened and people are starting to get back to work and going back to school. electricity has been restored to hundreds of thousands of people. in two towns of massachusetts, 90% of the residents have no electricity. at least 15 deaths here in the u.s. and in canada have been reported during this snowstorm

which buried cars and closed airports over the weekend. things are slowly getting back to normal at san francisco international airport after a weekend of cancellations as a result of the northeast storm. dozens of flights were canceled friday and saturday as airports on the east coast shut down because of blizzard conditions. that left a lot of passengers stranded at airports nationwide including sfo. but all of the major airports have reopened after that storm. let's check in with sal who is covering some breaking news for us. >> just got word of a possible structure fire in redwood city on maple street. 722 maple is the address they've sent, a full -- it looks like a one-alarm response in redwood city. we'll let you know. this is according to the maps here near the grocery outlet in redwood city. we'll let you know about this as it comes in. let's take a look at some of the traffic. westbound bay bridge improving as you come into the area.
